Why: “Wheelchair dancing integrates people with and without physical disabilities and can be enjoyed by people of all ages and ability levels. Because of its physical, inclusive, and social nature, our program offers significant benefits to participants. In fact, a 2012 scientific study of our Wheel One™ program conducted by the Palo Alto Veterans Healthcare Administration proved that our program was psychologically and physically beneficial to participants. The results included improvement in range of motion, mood and confidence, strength, wheelchair skills, coordination, speed, balance, and some people even reported weight loss over the 6 week period. This is just a small example of why it would be beneficial for therapists to become certified and offer this type of therapy to their clients. Dancing is fun too!” It was also mentioned that these courses have been previously approved for CCU credit, so check your state licensure board to see the scoop on that for you.
