My rating: 4 of 5 stars
It took me a while to get into this book, so it took me 3 weeks to finish. (Way longer than I usually spend on a book.) I would just be getting to know the narrator and other characters of one story line when the book would jump into another. And not just another view point, no, a completely different story with different characters, different voices… everything. It was very jarring. However, as I came back through each story, I began to appreciate the little details that connected the stories together, like the comet birthmark. Although the story/stories themselves weren’t really my cup of tea– although I will say I enjoyed some more than others– I admire the author’s literary daring to pull off a puzzle novel of sorts. I’ve never seen anything written like this before. For one author to not only write from 6 different narrators in 6 different voices, make them tie together and it not be a complete flop in 1 novel… that sounds like a success to me! Overall, I may consider purchasing this one. (I only purchase books I know I’ll read again.) Because it is a puzzle of sorts, I’d kind of like to go back sometime and explore just how the puzzle fits together more in depth.
