This little study looked at how a mom’s physical activity level during pregnancy effects her young.
They took a bunch of female mice and equipped their cages with running wheels for a week. And being mice, they ran.. a lot. Then they took the lady mice and paired them up some good lookin’ hunky guy mice and, being mice, pregnancy ensued. Now half the running wheels were disabled to where they wouldn’t move. So half the pregnant mice could run in their wheels and half could not. Once the babies were born, they were removed to other all wheel-free cages away from all contact with the adults and site of the wheels. However, the babies would spend several days of each week in a special cage with a wheel equipped with a distance measuring device and another device that determines how much the mice move outside of the wheel. There was no difference in the babies initially, but once they hit puberty, the babies born to wheel running moms were more likely run farther in the wheels AND move about more in general in the cage.
I don’t know how well a mouse can translate to human beings, but what I see is moms need to keep up their workout regimens for the sake of their babies while pregnant! I also wonder if this might have something to do with our obesity epidemic. The culture tells pregnant women to slow down and “you’re eating for two.” Is that mind set setting up our kids for obese futures?
