With an opioid epidemic going on and research showing that acetaminophen (a common ingredient in over the counter pain relieving pills like Advil) can reduce empathy, it is important that all medical professionals be knowledgeable of alternative solutions for managing pain. Physical therapy is one, of course. What else is out there?
Enter: topical natural analgesics.
Most everyone from clinician to Joe Schmoe Public is familiar with Icy Hot and their slew of products. There are several other similar brands out there, that I won’t go into as I haven’t tried them personally. In many clinics, I’ve seen and use in my clinic Biofreeze. The kind people at Elkhead Labs have let me know of another emerging all natural topical analgesic: Ecolyptus. I’ve tried it out on myself after my runs this past week. I also personally use Biofreeze, so that’s what I’ll be comparing it to. Which I think is a fair comparison, because they are touting similar claims: long lasting pain relief, cooling sensation. First of all, Ecolyptus worked just as well as the Biofreeze. It seemed to last just as long as the professional Biofreeze. I actually prefer the scent of the Ecolyptus personally, BUT that scent does stick around where as Biofreeze has the magically vanishing scent. The roll-on and spray versions of the Biofreeze are handy for those of us self-applying, so you don’t have to use gloves or wash your hands after application. I like the feeling of the Ecolyptus better than Biofreeze. Biofreeze kind of makes my skin tingle a little in addition to the cold, where as the Ecolyptus just makes it feel like the area to which it is applied is under a fan. Ecolyptus is a little more expensive than Biofreeze at $20 online for 3 oz. vs. $15 for 3 oz. regular Biofreeze online or I noticed last week my local CVS now has Biofreeze on the shelf. I think the market for the Ecolyptus will be the folk that want the all natural product, as it has been certified by the Natural Products Association as being made with natural products. From what I can see on Biofreeze’s label, a few minor ingredients aren’t natural including the famous green color!
So anyway, give Ecolyptus a try if you like. It works well!
