I Know You Love Me– Now Let Me Die by Louis M. Profeta, MD as originally seen on Dr. Profeta’s LinkedIn page
I won’t make a long comment on this. 1) It is more of a “think about it” yourself piece and 2) my air conditioner went out and this hot laptop is going to be the death of me right now.
I’ve seen this even in rehab. These sad, frail little bodies are admitted with wonderfully supportive family by their side every moment of every day. That family will do anything for that patient EXCEPT allow them to just be. Instead, I get to the be bad guy that sometimes literally drags them (“total assist”) down the hallway on a walker all the while that loving family cheers them on. These are the cases that truly break my heart. When is enough enough? When is it ok to coach a family through letting their dear mom or dad go on? When are we as healthcare providers aiding and abetting suffering? When are we disobeying the Hippocratic oath and doing harm?
That is a deep, dark gray area.
Think about it.
