Curable is an app available on Apple and Android devices or you can use it straight from your lap or desktop. The app is based on the current scientific understanding of pain science. The content is driven by real scientists that work with people with chronic pain– researchers, physicians in a multitude of specialties, psychologists, physical therapists, neuroscientists– and also real people who have experienced chronic pain themselves. They seem to be the pain busting dream team with their combination of research-backed knowledge and experience.
The app works on the biopsychosocial model of pain management, which as I mentioned, is on the cutting edge of pain busting techniques and is what I use on myself and my patients. It addresses pain from the multiple angles that contribute to it– physical, emotional and mental.
The app is designed as a text message between you and Clara, the hostess. She asks you some questions to determine which of the 3 areas are contributing to your pain and what aspects of those areas would benefit you most to address. From your answers, she presents a menu of session options in several categories– education, meditation, writing and brain training. Education are listening sessions, where you are taught techniques that can alter your specific pattern of pain. Meditation is a session designed to relax your brain and help it rewire into positive pathways and away from painful pathways. Expressive writing sessions give you a prompt and let you answer some questions and be honest with yourself. Brain training uses cognitive behavior therapy (CBT) techniques to investigate the pain producing thought patterns active in your life and to replace them with positive thought patterns.
Curable’s team recommends doing the 10-20 minute sessions 2-3 times per week. And continue doing so for about a month to start seeing improvements. This is different for everyone. Some use if more frequently, many daily, in the beginning and then tapper off. Some report seeing about a 10% improvement for each month of use and continue on with the app for some time.
As for my own experience, I’ve LOVED it. It melds so many necessary pain management courses into one package in your pocket. I think it will be particularly useful in areas such as my own that are lacking in pain management resources backed by current pain science. So many of my patients are still just being prescribed pills, which of course have their place, but shouldn’t be the ONLY treatment used in the management of chronic pain. I hope to share this with any of my friends, family and patients that are even minimally tech savvy who are experiencing pain.
Did I mention you can try it for FREE? Yes, you can! Click here for more info or to sign up for your free trial. Once you decide you love it as much as I do, you can continue on with monthly, annual or lifetime subscription options, which are totally reasonably priced. If you think it’s not helping after 30 days, they’ll even give you a refund! The subscription also includes access to the Curable community where you can learn and share with other users and have access to the Curable podcast. Just do it. You’ll thank yourself later. There’s really nothing to lose except your pain.
