My rating: 3 of 5 stars
My husband has suckered me into reading another of his favorite fantasy series. Thankfully each book in this series isn’t almost or more than 1,ooo pages each, so it will tick along much quicker. This first book in the series moved a little slow for my liking honestly, which is why I gave it three stars instead of four. I liked the story line and all the characters I’ve met thus far though, which is why I’ve already begun the second book in the series. My husband likes this series a lot, mostly because he can see himself in the main character, Harry. To be fair, I see that too, for better or worse haha. I also rather like that the story is written in the first person, which makes it unique. I haven’t seen many of those recently. I’m interested to see how the creatures in the series unfold: will they be more classical fantasy creatures like centaurs and fauns and demigods or more creative, like the scorpions that grow up to the size of small dogs that appeared in this first book? Or perhaps a combo? We shall see! I do also like the murder mystery aspect of this series, as one of my favorite series is a murder mystery series (The Cat Who….) and I LOVE watching NCIS on tv. So I’m really hoping the pacing picks up in the next book or so, because this series could really hit a nitch for me.
